Korean · learn by reading

Learn Korean from texts you want to finish.

taihaa is a reading loop for Korean, alongside Mandarin, Cantonese, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Bring an article, a story, or a class text. Tap a word for its romanization and an English translation, save the useful ones with the sentence still attached, and review them later.

Close-up of the Korean reader with romanization above each word. 커피를 is selected, with the translation “coffee” in the word panel.
Romanization sits above each word. The panel is the translation you check before you save.

아침에 커피를 마셔요.

I drink coffee in the morning. Each word keeps its particle or ending in the sentence. The reader looks up the dictionary form for you.

achime

아침에

in the morning

keopireul

커피를

coffee

masyeoyo

마셔요

drink

Reading, then a small review queue

1

Bring a text you can finish

A news paragraph, a class handout, a short story, or an EPUB chapter. A starter from the library works too. taihaa does not open on a stack of unrelated example sentences.

2

Tap the whole word

Korean puts spaces between words, and each word carries its particles and endings. Tap 학교에 and the reader looks up 학교. Tap 먹었어요 and it looks up 먹다.

3

Review the sentence

Saved words come back with the line they came from and their romanization. Again, Learning, Known, and Easy set a simple spaced schedule. Ignore drops a word from review.

What Korean reading needs from a reader

A word list can introduce vocabulary. It cannot show you how 커피 takes a particle in a sentence you already care about. taihaa keeps the practice attached to a text: the reader for the first meeting, the saved sentence for the next ones.

Romanization over every word

Turn on Romanization in reader settings and each word shows Revised Romanization above the Hangul, like pinyin for Mandarin and Jyutping for Cantonese. It follows the standard sound changes, so 같이 reads gachi and 국물 reads gungmul. It also shows in the word panel, vocabulary, review, and Daily.

Particles and endings come off

학교에, 친구가, and 서울로 look up 학교, 친구, and 서울. 갔어요, 마셨어요, and 추워요 look up 가다, 마시다, and 춥다. These are short rules, not a full grammar engine, so a rare ending can still miss. Type the translation that fits when it does.

The word you tapped is the word you save

Vocabulary keeps the form from the sentence, such as 먹었어요, with the dictionary form's translation. Review then shows it in the same line you read.

Level tags are estimates

Lessons can show an automatic CEFR tag, the same kind of estimate used for the other languages. It helps you pick a text. It is not an exam result, and a short passage can be tagged with low confidence.

A practical first session

  1. Register and set the target language to Korean.
  2. Open a sample lesson, a library starter, or paste a short paragraph you already wanted to read.
  3. Read one page. Save three to eight words, and edit any translation that does not fit the sentence.
  4. Come back for review. The card should still show the sentence from that page.

URL import works best on public articles. If a page is paywalled or mostly scripts, paste the text instead. English is the base language for meanings. News in the library can pull public Korean feeds from Yonhap, BBC News 코리아, and VOA Korean.

Start with one Korean text.

You do not need a full course loaded in advance. One article is enough to see whether reading-first practice fits how you study.
